The "Yang" in "Yangzhuo Yongcuo" is interpreted as "top" in Tibetan; "Zhuo" is interpreted as "pasture"; "Yong" is interpreted as "jasper"; "Cuo" is interpreted as "lake". The connection is "the jasper lake in the pasture above".
This is a literal explanation of Yanghuo, and Yanghu is regarded by Tibetans as "the goddess's scattered turquoise earrings" because no matter which angle you look at, you cannot see the full picture of Yangzhuo, her body. It winds in the mountains for more than 130 kilometers. Only on a map or at high altitude can you be surprised to find that it is like an earring, embedded in the helix of the mountain. When the sun shines at different times, she will show extremely rich levels of blue, just like a dream.
One of the unique features of Yamdrok Yumcuo is that its water source comes from the snow water of the surrounding Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains, but it does not have a water outlet. The inflow of snow water and natural evaporation achieve a strange dynamic balance.
[Yamdrok Yumcuo] is located in Langkazi County, Shannan Prefecture, Tibet, on the old road (south road) from Lhasa to Shigatse. Together with Namtso Lake and Manasarovar Lake, it is known as the three holy lakes in Tibet. The lake is 4,441 meters above sea level and covers an area of 678 square kilometers. It can be reached from Lhasa by crossing the Gangbala Mountain, about 100 kilometers away.
As can be seen from the picture above, the hiking routes in Kailash are divided into two: one is the outer ring hiking route around the mountain, which is a large mountain ring route with Kailash as the core. The other one is the inner circle of Mount Kailash. The inner circle is a small mountain loop with Mount Ingatu on the south side of Kailash as its core. The total length of the outer ring of Kailash is 54 kilometers, and it takes 2-3 days to hike. If you are a local who often walks around the mountains, you can complete the 54 kilometers in one day. Generally, you can turn the inner circle only after completing 13 turns on the outer circle.
When tourists go to Kailash to hike around the mountains, it is basically an external loop. If it is for pious pilgrimage to pray for blessings, the journey can usually be completed within two days. If you want to enjoy the pleasure of hiking under the sacred Mount Kailash, you can slow down your pace and arrange a three-day trip, which will give you more time to take photos and appreciate this beautiful sacred mountain.
There are two directions for turning around the mountain: Tibetan Buddhists and Hindus turn in a clockwise direction, always keeping Kailash on the right side of the hiker, while Bon believers turn in the opposite direction and counterclockwise. Below we will introduce the hiking direction in a clockwise direction.
Taqin Town—Qugu Temple (8 kilometers)
Taqin Town is a small town at an altitude of 4,560 meters at the foot of Mount Kailash. It was formed because people who come to Mount Kailash gather here every year. Tachen can be said to be the gateway to Kailash and the first stop for tourists in front of the sacred mountain. As more and more people come to the mountain, the infrastructure here is also improving day by day. There are the best local hotels here, where you can not only eat local Tibetan food, but also flavored food from Sichuan, Xinjiang, Shaanxi and other places. In addition, equipment for hiking up and down the mountain can also be purchased or rented in the shops in Tachin Town.
Qugu Temple is 4860 meters above sea level and is the first supply point during the hike. The supply point can provide rest, meals and accommodation for tourists and believers who hike around the mountain, but conditions are limited.
Prayer Flag Square, also called the Two-legged Pagoda, is one of the landmark buildings on the way to Mount Kailash. Its magic lies in the fact that the lower part of the pagoda is connected, and a door-shaped passage is formed between the "legs", which is considered to be the "Gate to the Holy Mountain of Gangdise". It is said that only innocent people can pass between its legs and receive God's favor, while sinful people cannot pass through the pagoda.
The hiking distance from Taqin Town to Qugu Temple is 8 kilometers. The road condition of this section is good, the road surface is flat, and the altitude does not rise much, so the hiking is not difficult. Among them, the road from Taqin to Prayer Flag Square is a long uphill road. This section is 4 kilometers long. You can choose to take an environmentally friendly vehicle. It is a gentle descent from Prayer Flag Square to Qugu Temple. Tourists with poor physical strength can start their Kailash hiking tour from Prayer Flag Square.
Qugu Temple-Zhire Temple (12 kilometers)
Zhire Temple is the first accommodation place commonly chosen by tourists who hike to the mountains. It is about 5,200 meters above sea level. Accommodation is available here at Shishapangma Hotel and other tent rest sites. The altitude here is relatively high, so tourists need to pay attention to their physical condition at all times. If they feel seriously unwell, they must inform the tour guide in time.
The hiking distance from Qugu Temple to Zhire Temple is about 12 kilometers, with ups and downs on the mountain road. Walking along the Laqu Canyon, there is a river called Laqu in the middle. You can walk on both the east and west banks of the river, and you can view Mount Kailash along the way. This section of the hike is not difficult to hike, but it tests one’s endurance and resilience.
Zhire Temple - Zhuomala Pass (8 kilometers)
There are no trees or weeds in the Zhuomala Pass, and it is as desolate as a lunar crater. Apart from the prayer flags, the only colors are the two small green lakes on the south side of the mountain pass - known as the Dakini Bathing Pool, also called Tojitso. It is said that it remains frozen all year round, like two shining, crystal clear treasures. The mirror is very charming and romantic.
The Zhuomala Pass is 5,700 meters above sea level. It is the highest altitude place in the entire mountain trekking process, and it is also the most dangerous and painful section of the trekking process.
There is also a sky burial platform between Zhire Temple and Zhuomala Pass. From Zhire Temple to the Sky Burial Platform, it is a 4-kilometer gentle uphill climb covered with rocks. Although the ground is uneven, it is not too difficult as long as you walk slowly. After passing the celestial burial platform and reaching the Zhuomala Pass, there is an uphill slope about 3 kilometers long, with a steep slope and covered with piles of rubble, which is known as "Hell Break".
Zhuomala Pass-Zuchu Temple (16 kilometers)
After passing the Zhuomala Pass, it is the way down the mountain. First there is a steep slope of about 6 kilometers. Most people think that climbing over the Zhuomala Pass is a tough battle, but they don’t know that the 70-degree steep descent is the most dangerous part of the mountain climbing journey. In addition, there is no road on the steep hillside. The mountain is full of fine stones and dust, making it extremely easy to slip and sprain your feet. If you encounter ice and snow, going down the mountain is even more dangerous. Then we arrived at the first supply point after going down the mountain. After getting up early and climbing the mountain, most of us were exhausted and needed to rest and replenish energy.
The rest of today’s hike is a relatively gentle section of about 10 kilometers along the river valley. It is relatively easy, but the long journey can easily make people collapse.
Zuchu Temple is the accommodation point for the second day of hiking around the mountain. Tourists with good physical strength can walk more than 10 kilometers to reach Taqin accommodation.
Zuchu Temple-Tachen (10 kilometers)
During the trip from Zuchu Temple to Tachen, you will pass the last supply point of this hike, "Zongdui", which is the exit of the mountain. You can see Taqin, Namunani Peak and Baga Prairie. Starting from Zuchu Temple, you will reach Zongdui on foot for about 6 kilometers. This journey is gentle uphill and has many curves. Although this is a long road with almost no slopes above 30 degrees, and there are no rugged rocks, swamps or mud pits, it should be said that it is not very difficult. However, this kind of torture that has no difficulty, neither inspires fighting spirit nor has an end in sight, is even more unbearable than the fatigue of climbing a mountain pass.
The distance from Zongdui to Taqin is 4 kilometers. The road in this section is gentle and suitable for driving and horseback riding. This can also be regarded as the end point. Visitors can take a scenic environmentally friendly car here or call a car back to Talqin. Only when we return to the end of this hike can we complete the outer circle of Mount Kailash.
